The day I became a fire twirler!

Fire Twirling

This island has an air about it. It gives to a natural high on life type feeling. You are never in a rush. There is no need to worry about plans or worry about anything for that fact. We all have agreed that since stepping foot off that boat something has changed within us.

Maybe it's the chill music always playing, or the blue sky and white sand beaches, maybe it's the lack of roads and cars, or the acceptance of everyone in the town. No matter what it is we can all agreed we are completely relaxed and content.

I spent the day hanging out in the beach and in the water.

This evening was going to be a special one. Something I have noticed about many hippy towns here is the attraction to fire. I'm not sure why but fire seems to have a pull on many people in the island regions. Our friend Ashleigh had been practicing for a month and was finally ready to test out her skills with real fire.

We headed out for the night stopping to eat an amazing seafood BBQ before making the fire plunge.

Turns out the fire loving locals weren't going to be spinning that evening. Never fear! With a little bit of conversation we had found some people to give of the gasoline and help us get started.

Tentative at first Ashleigh started her twirling. Little by little she gained more and more confidence and did more tricks. She looked incredible! We were all cheering her on and the locals were too. Before we knew it more people were joining in. We had started a whole fire show.

I am not going to lie. I am extremely attracted to the idea of twirling fire. It's cool and exciting and maybe a bit dangerous. But for anyone who has read my blog I'm clearly not the person to stand back and not try new things.

Within minutes of my decision I had some experts giving me tips and teaching me. I spent the next while off to the side with an unlit baton practicing. They taught me the basics. Spinning in front, to the side, and over head. Nothing to crazy and nothing that would even come close to letting me get burnt (I swear mom it was safe).

Confident in my small skills I took the stage and lit the batons. Slowly and very carefully I began to spin in front of me. I was petrified but excited at the same moment. I could barely move and only moved the baton. Frozen like a statue I did my twirling.

Whooooo I did it! I may not have been fluid or danced around like anyone else but I had co queried a little bit of fire.

But that was not enough. Within seconds I was off to the side to practice agains me again. I tried loosening up and moving to the flow of the music playing was mastering the fire around me. Only in Asia can it be acceptable to just twirl fire on the beach. No police or rules to stop it from happening. There are no rules except dont be a jerk.

By the end of the night I had twirled three times with fire. Each time I relaxed more and more and by the last time I was slowly dancing around. It is safe to say I loved it and I can not wait to buy my own fire baton and continue to practice.

*** I have found out after the fact there is a police force. However it consists of very few people and it seems the guesthouse owners pay a small fee for a blind eye to be turned.

** also I have tons of pictures but I need to buy a new adaptor to get them on my ipad. :(
