Off Road Scooter Trip Nepal 2013

I am going to skip writing about the rest of Chitwan and Lumbini and will hopefully get a second to breath and write all about it during this week.

Yesterday was ridiculous. Seriously, that is the only way to describe it. About a week ago when I started my painting project I put some word out to backpackers and other volunteers and met a few people who were interested in taking part in the project. I have had four people so far come up to visit and paint. Yesterday two of those four decided to take part in an adventure with me.

After having a little bit of a rough stomach in the morning I treated myself to a manicure (you truly do not want to see what my hands looked like) for a whopping 5 dollars. I met up with Alexis and Jerad, two wonderful people who are backpacking the world. We decided it would be fun to rent scooters and drive up and paint for the day.

Now if anyone remembers my encounters with this scary road you are already probably thinking how bad of an idea that sounds. Going up was not too bad. The scooter does not have much power but we slowly trucked our way up in the pouring rain. When we got to the turn off a local stopped us to pay some random toll that has never been collected before. Sounded fishy but we gave him the equivalent of 50 cents for all of us. Some how we made it to the school after sliding out quite a few times.

The nursery was almost complete so the boys put some finishing touches outlining the remaining letters. As they did this I got to work designing the next rooms, year 1 and kindergarten. The principal asked that the walls be cartoon characters and as cute as possible. I chose to make the Year 1 classroom a jungle theme and the Kindergarten a mountain theme.

My host sister loves that pose!

With the daylight fading I had enough time to draw up both rooms and paint a little. I can not wait to get back to work because the designs are turning out better than I expected.

Because of the monsoon downpour my host dad/principal/Aatma suggested we take a different route down. The route was almost non existent. The entire path down was covered in rocks, mud, landslides, and overgrown in many areas. Luckily we had some pretty skilled drivers that were able to catch the fall everytime we were about to crash (which is scary since these roads are all winding in a cliff edge).

Even though it was a little scary it was one of my favorite days so far. I saw a whole new part of the village and the area where my kids hike over an hour from to school everyday. The rice patty fields are in full force being fed by water from the monsoon and I was mind blown with the ingenuity that these village people have. They have an entire water system dug out to feed all of the fields as well as rock levers to stop flow to pick or replant a field when needed. It is an amazing intricate water system that they have had to rely on for hundreds of years. Beautiful.

They day ended by having dinner at Olive and going to Blues Bar for a farewell party for the first member of our crew to depart. Ivan's time is up here and it was such a weird feeling saying bye to one of our crew. It has not been this long but I have said earlier how close we have all grown in a short period of time, they all seem like I have known them half of my life. Time is seriously flying too fast. It was a fun night filled with laughter and your typical world problems talk that you typical getting hanging out with other backpackers and volunteers. Sad to say farewell but best of luck Ivan, the crew will miss you! It has been a blast!
